Male vs Female Genre Preferences

This graph the difference in male and female preferences regarding different movie genres. As you can see above the thriller category shows that more males enjoy thriller movies, when creating my thriller trailer I aim for it to be as enjoyed by females as males. I plan to do this by, despite the main character being male, the villain is female which is not stereotypical and may intrigued more female viewers. Also as it is set in a school I aim for students to feel a relation and encourage them to watch it, the increase of student viewers will mean an increase the amount of female viewers.

Film Inspirations

To help develop my plot and give me more ideas, I decided to research some of the top thriller movies there is and read the descriptions on the film and the plots. Every different website and person has a different opinion on which Thrillers are the best out there, because of this, after researching and visiting a numerous of different movies websites and going through lots of reviews and rankings, I have picked out what seems to be 12 of the most popular Thriller movies out there from 1951 – 2010.

Choosing my Genre

This graph shows the top-grossing genres over the past 15 years. This guide will help me to understand what are peoples preferences when it comes to deciding on my genre and I have decided I will try to use one of the top 5 genres. I had to take into consideration when choosing my genre my location and budget, therefore I found particularly with adventure and action I would not be able to provide the correct location and it would require a bigger budget. I also took into account when choosing my genre on my own personal preference, as I would be more enthusiastic researching and planning into a genre I have an interest in and would hopefully be able to create a successful trailer at the end of it, because of this I have decided to out-rule Drama. This has left me with Comedy and Thriller, both that are genres I enjoy. My location and budget would be able to support and make either genre into a successful trailer, despite Comedy being the overall top genre, I have decided to do a thriller trailer. I decided to do this as I felt it was more exciting and I could create a better storyline, I also believe with the location being a school this can be mysterious and school locations have been used in thriller movies before which proves to me this can be successful.

Brief

For my A2 media coursework I must create a promotion package relating to either, music, TV, radio and computer/video games. I decided to do my promotion package for a new film which must include a trailer and two of the following;

• a website homepage for the film
• a film magazine front cover, featuring the film
• a poster for the film

I have decided to include the magazine and poster. My coursework will consist of the progress I make throughout the year regarding my promotion package and all the research behind it.
